Monsoon trips near Pune

From June to September, the Western Ghats turn green and the waterfalls come alive. Tamhini Ghat, Malshej Ghat, Lonavala and Bhimashankar are the classic monsoon drives. Ghat roads can be slippery and foggy, so drive in daylight, check rain alerts before you leave, and avoid stopping under steep slopes.

For couples

Mahabaleshwar and Panchgani are the favourite romantic getaways, with valley views and strawberry farms in winter. For something quieter, try a beach stay at Kashid or a lakeside night at Bhandardara.

For families

Matheran is car-free, so children can walk around safely. Mahabaleshwar has plenty to do for all ages, and Alibaug is the easiest beach trip from Pune.

Got three or four days?

Goa (about 450 km) and the Konkan coast around Ganpatipule (about 330 km) are popular longer weekends. Both work best from October to May.

Tips for a smooth weekend

  • Leave early on Saturday morning to beat traffic on the Expressway and ghat roads
  • Book hotels early for long weekends and festival holidays
  • Kaas Plateau limits daily visitors in flower season, so book entry in advance
  • Carry rain gear in the monsoon and warm layers for hill stations in winter
