Kashmir is worth visiting in every season. The right time depends on what you want to see and who you are travelling with.
Spring: March to May
Orchards blossom and the Tulip Garden in Srinagar opens for a few weeks, usually around late March and April. Days are pleasant and nights are cool. A lovely time for couples.
Summer: June to August
The busiest season. Meadows in Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg are green, and it is cooler than the plains. Ideal for families during school holidays. Book early, as hotels and houseboats fill up.
Autumn: September to November
Chinar trees turn red and gold, skies are clear and crowds thin out. Nights get cold by November, so pack warm layers.
Winter: December to February
Snow covers Gulmarg, which becomes a skiing and snow-play destination. Heavy snowfall can close roads for a day or two, so keep a spare day in your plan.
Quick guide
- Honeymoon: spring or autumn
- Family with children: May and June
- Snow: January and February
- Fewer crowds: September and October
Adding Ladakh
The road from Srinagar to Leh is usually open from late spring to autumn only, so a combined Kashmir and Ladakh trip works best in summer.
